Why It's a Great Time to be Looking for a Job

It’s been a balmy summer in the UK. We’ve all enjoyed endless hours of daydreaming and sitting by the pool with that book we’ve wanted to read for the past 6 months. Those hot summer days moved ever so slowly, fuelled by long rosé-laden lunches, and summery evenings around the barbecue. Family and friends wining and dining to our heart’s content.

But once the rosé has dried up, conversations depleted, and you’ve touched down on the rainy tarmac after a late flight, the trepidation of going back to work is intensified by an overflowing email inbox, and a to-do list longer than your arm. It’s no wonder we’ve seen such a spike in the job market this September. A complete pivot from previous months when the Great Resignation was taking hold, we are now seeing job seekers looking to improve their situation and begin the hunt for that dream career.

While hauling out the CV and emailing it off to your local recruiter might just seem a little too dicey, what with rising inflation and interest rates, a decline in the stock market, and fear of an imminent recession, the workforce really should be tempted to stay put.

But as we are seeing more and more, the job market and the economy seem to be at odds. Where recruitment is ordinarily a good indicator of the state of play, job seeking and in turn hiring, seems to be gaining momentum finally.

So, is now a good time to be looking to change careers? And what are the important considerations?

Here are our top 3:

1. Salary (+ benefits). A salary isn’t just about the money, the entire package is a reflection of how you are valued and respected by your company. If your financial needs aren’t being met, and no further negotiation is put forward, then there are other options of companies offering great packages to attract the right talent.

2. Industry. Numerous sectors are seeing a steady growth in demand for very specific skills. Speaking to the importance of keeping your skills relevant for today – and the future – in order to future-proof your career.

3. Culture. It’s something we all talk about, but many companies fail to accomplish. It comes down to a host of factors, underpinned by the importance of a positive environment. Fostering a positive company culture ensures your workplace will sustain, engage and encourage you. From working with the right inspirational people, to the trust, autonomy, and flexibility to enable you to do a great job, these all play pivotal roles in creating the right company culture. You might even find yourself with a little extra vacation time on your hands! And while there is an increase in recruitment for permanent and interim roles, with more and more clients confident to hire for the long term. The willingness to embrace different ways of working has also meant companies are more inclined to look towards employing a more freelance/contractor strategy when it comes to sourcing talent. So a win-win for all really!

There has never been a better time than right now to start looking for that new role. With the job market flourishing and thousands of exciting new opportunities across various sectors and industries becoming available, you have the chance to land yourself your dream job and command competitive employment packages from industry-leading companies, and carve the future you want for yourself.
